Apple forks out $100M to settle dispute

In a bid to put the entire Creative lawsuit to rest Apple has doled out $100 million to make it go away. Deep pockets indeed. “The lawsuits centered around Creative’s claim that iPods infringed on its patent for a navigation system used to organize and access music on its Zen music players.

The settlement, announced Wednesday, allows Cupertino-based Apple to recoup a portion of its payment if other electronics companies license Singapore-based Creative’s technology.” To make matters worse Apple is about to issue a recall of 1.1 million laptop batteries that were initially supplied by Sony.

Apple Computer is recalling 1.1 million laptop batteries supplied by Sony, citing a fire hazard, The Associated Press reports.

This is just breaking so I’ll be sure to update it as information comes availalbe.

Microsoft Admits Macbooks Are Bug Free

Now this is a rather amusing piece. Microsoft accidentally inferred that Macs, namely Powerbooks, are virus free.

Some things are just too good to be true and too honest not to be. A MacDailyNews reader turned up this quirk of the Microsoft Security page, which showed a happy Powerbook user identified with the label “Click. You’re Clean.” They’ve done a great job proving that it is, indeed, a Powerbook, as seen above.

Another Dell Goes BOOM

It’s not bad enough that Dells profits are down 51% and the SEC are investigating them. Now we have reports of yet another Dell laptop detonating.

This unfortunate Latitude (appears to be a D610 D510) met its fate when, like so many others, it was cut down before its time in a violent and easily prevented explosion. We’d tell you more, but unfortunately the article is in a tongue we don’t speak (sorry, we took Zulu in high school), but if any of our Dutch pals want to apprise us as to the situation, we’d be most obliged.

MacBook Wi-Fi hack didn’t use Apple drivers

Not that this news was any great surprise but, a researcher that exposed wireless driver issues at Black Hat didn’t use Apple drivers.

“Despite SecureWorks being quoted saying the Mac is threatened by the exploit demonstrated at Black Hat, they have provided no evidence that in fact it is,” Apple Director of Mac PR, Lynn Fox, told Macworld. “To the contrary, the SecureWorks demonstration used a third party USB 802.11 device–not the 802.11 hardware in the Mac–a device which uses a different chip and different software drivers than those on the Mac. Further, SecureWorks has not shared or demonstrated any code in relation to the Black Hat-demonstrated exploit that is relevant to the hardware and software that we ship.”

Shoe Lacing Methods

This is freaking hilarious. This site has a piece on 31 ways to lace your shoes. Amusing…

My diagrams are all drawn as though looking from the front of the shoe, such that the lower part of the lacing is at the bottom of the diagram, and are colour-coded to make it easier to follow where the lace runs. Generally, the start of the lacing is grey, whilst the lace end that starts on the left side is blue and the end that starts on the right side is yellow. For colour-blind visitors, Blue=Dark=Left, Yellow=Light=Right.

Check it out.

Apple’s Leopard Leopard Leaked On Web

The folks over at Apple Insider have some more information on Leopard. The forthcoming OS will be pretty sweet from what we’ve seen.

In particular, a posting to the Windows Vista developer community site, AeroXperience, reveals well over a dozen previously undiscussed features — specifically those pertinent to developers. Each of the enhancements are present in a beta release of Leopard (Leopard Preview) which was handed to developers at Apple’s developer conference this week.

I’m especially looking forward to the Time Machine.

Time Machine is a fascinating file backup system that Apple is building into Leopard. It works not only across the Mac OS X Finder but can also be built into third party applications. According to the web report, one of the tools Apple is giving developers is a programming interface to exclude unimportant files. Removing these files from the backup set should improves backup performance and reduces space needed for a backup.

Very cool.
