Knoppix

Knoppix 5.0 is available.

Just because your computer can’t boot up Windows from your hard drive doesn’t mean you can’t boot it up with another operating system on another disk just long enough to rescue your important files. Today we’ll use the completely free Knoppix Linux Live disk to safely move your files on a failing hard drive to a healthy USB drive - no Windows required.

Treo or Blackberry?

I’m in the middle of trying to figure out which mobile device I want to pick up. I’m leaning towards the Treo. I found this great post on The Apple Blog dot com which tackles this very question.

I need a PDA Cell Phone for my job, but I want to get one that will still work well with my [at-home] MacBook. I’m tied-in to Cingular, and have narrowed the field down to either the Treo 650, or the BlackBerry 7130. I’d like to know - from your own experiences - which is more OS X friendly.

Here are some of the things I’m looking for:
- Ability to easily stay up to date on Work email (exchange server)
- Good tie-in with my Outlook Calendar from work
- Ability to easily check my Gmail - probably through POP
- Bluetooth for syncing with my MacBook, as well as headset
- A good Speakerphone
- Decent web browsing.
- And obviously, happy integration with my Mac/OS X

The crowd seems to be leaning towards the Treo as well.

Live From WWDC 2006

Ryan Block from Engadget has a running update from WWDC. He has shared with us the release of the new Intel based Mac Pro. This will replace the workhorse G5.

Dual Core up to 3GHz
4MB Shared L2 Cache
NVIDIA GeForce 7300GT, 256MB
$2,499 USD

Announced support for 64-bit Unix apps in Leopard release of Mac OS X. “First feature is support for 64-bit applications. In Tiger, we brought support for 64-bit at the Unix layer. IN Leopard, we’re taking this a giant leap forward, up through Carbon and Cocoa right to your applicaitons. In Leopard, you can have a fully native 64-bit Carbon application and we did this in a completely compatible 32-bit compatible way. That means that you can run 32-bit and 64-bit applicaitons side by side. None are emulated. 64-bit top to bottom. Number 2: (this is a big one): Time Machine.”

NutritionData Calorie Counter

As I try to lose pounds (10 down, 5 to go) I am pleased to find this tool. The Calorie Counter from NutritionData is an online resource that can help you to plan out your intake.

ND is the easy way to determine what’s good and bad about the foods you eat. Search for foods by name with ND’s FoodSearch tool (in the top right corner of every page), then click on the resulting links to view each food’s nutritional analysis.

When the food you’re looking for isn’t in ND’s database, you can still analyze it with the help of ND’s Custom Entry Tool.
